This map of New Spain is an enlarged version of Giacomo Gastaldi's map of 1548, except that the Yucatan is no longer shown as an Island. Shows present-day Mexico in the 16th century, along with Baja California northward, the southern U.S. including Florida, half of Cuba, etc. Wagner, NW Coast, 48, noting the map as "the same as No. 18 [i.e. the 1548 issue of the map] with trifling changes." This is the 1562 issue of the first state of the Ruscelli map, following the 1561 appearance, with the plate mark running off the top of the page, and without the added names and other features of the 1574 and 1598 states.
