SHERWIN & COTTON EASTWORKS TILE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
English, 1909, Sherwin & Cotton Eastwood Tile Works, Hanley Staffordshire. The front titled and with copyright. The tile printed with a glazed sepia image of Lincoln, slightly raised in areas to produce a subtle three-dimensional effect, inscribed on the reverse in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, February 12th, 1909.
Modeled from the only untouched negative in the United States, taken 1864, in a cable-twist wood frame. Measuring 9 by 6 in., overall 11.5 by 8.75 in. (Cond: internal hairline firing crack)
Cf. Moses P. Rice of Sherwin & Cotton Eastwood Tile Company obtained the rights to the Gardiners 1863 Lincoln photograph. In 1969 Rice and the company began to reprint this iconic portrait on tiles, ceramics and other objects through 1900.
