**First Time At Auction**
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A finely-detailed cast-brass crucifix with a three-bar composition and a central depiction of the crucified Jesus; he stands upon a slanted foot rest and with a coronal halo behind his head. Two downward-facing cherubs fly towards him, and above them is a sign reading "This is the King of the Jews" from Luke 23:38 that was nailed to the top of Christ's cross. Below the image of Christ is a depiction of Adam's skull in the cave; this iconography is meant to remind us that Adam lost Paradise through forbidden knowledge, and Christ will return us to it. Size: 6" H (15.2 cm).
