Very clean and excellent map of Maryland and Delaware dating to 1861 by A. J. Johnson. This is the most decorative example of Johnson's Maryland - Delaware series. Along the top of the map are three engraved images of important government buildings of the day: The General Post Office, The Treasury Buildings, and the Patent Office. In the lower left quadrant are engraved views of the Capitol Building and Harper's Ferry, an important gateway to the west. A text block at bottom center describes the work of Mason & Dixon in drawing the Pennsylvania - Maryland border along the 38th latitude. This map is based upon the earlier work of J. H. Colton. This version of the map is the first of the series in which the government buildings appear at the top of the map. The previous variant, 1860, features only the capitol building in roughly the same location. The next variant, taking a hint from Colton, will drop out the views in the lower left quadrant entirely in exchange for an inset plan of Washington D.C. Vivid hand-coloring and an excellent strike from the steel engraved plate. Tiny chip at upper right corner margin, else near fine. 12.25 x 16.75.
