Lot 1636 Details

Description
KELLOGG'S "PEP" BUTTONS & BEANIE RELATED RETAILER'S PROMOTIONAL SHEET ORIGINAL ART.

These famous cereal give-away buttons were created by the master of premiums for kids, designer Sam Gold. Millions of these 13/16" litho buttons went into post-war cereal boxes issued as five sub-sets of 18 (each sub-set including Superman) over a two year period 1945-1946 so that in the end 86 different buttons comprised a set. This 8.5x11" sheet of vellum w/black pencil original art is for 1952 retailer's promotional sheet that has faint text (visible in reflected light) at top left reading "Build Up Your 1952 Ice Cream Sales With These Comic Characters," indicating that the premium concept was being shopped around to other potential issuers. Characters shown pulling sales chart figures upward at upper right include Little Orphan Annie, Lillums, Smitty and Shadow. Seven button images are shown as well, including Herby, Smitty, Dick Tracy Jr., Pop Jenks, Smokey Stover, Little Orphan Annie and Harold Teen. Left has image of boy wearing beanie covered in these buttons (though none feature images) and lower right has sketch of advertising sign for this proposed promotion. Horizontal fold at center, but o/w clean and Exc. A unique and interesting item for the Pep pin collector. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold and comes with LOA.
