A very rare old carved wooden mask decorated with incised and raised linear designs, metal studs and spike like appendages all set onto an elongated form, raised stylized brow, carved coiffure and the swept back goat or ram horns. The Mask interior shows obvious handling and wear with signs of field use as a ceremonial dance mask.This mask is believed to be a depiction of the youngest member of the family and represents the fusion between the untamed animal world and the human world represented by kpwan. Kpwan pre masks are usually danced by boys aged between seventeen and twenty. Baule peoples, Cote D'Ivoire, Africa. Early to Mid 20th century with ritual field use.The mask itself measures 18 inches tall x 9 inches wide. We will include a metal display stand.
