Alligator, signed and inscribed "Chas R knight, Florida, 1898", graphite on board, 5 x 15-1/2 in.; modern frame, 10-1/4 x 21-1/4 in.
Provenance: The Charleston Renaissance Gallery, South CarolinaNote:A sculptor, illustrator and paloeartist, Knight is best known for his renditions of prehistoric life in the "Halls of Man" at New York's Museum of Natural History. As a result of the attention he received for this work he was commissioned for murals throughout the country, and illustrated numerous books focused on dinosaurs and the natural world.
