Gold frame measures 36 1/2" X 40 1/2". Flag measures 31 1/2" X 35 1/2". The painted white cotton flag reads "HEAD-QUARTERS OF CAPT. GOTT'S COMPANY National Guard ZOUAVES." Letters on the flag utilize black, red & green paint. Pencil lines can be seen to aid in painting on a straight line. Capt. Benjamin F. Gott initially served w/ the 57th New York volunteer infantry. He mustered in as a Captain on 16 October, 1861 in New York City. Gott's company left for Washington D.C. & subsequently Virginia in the spring of 1862. The 57th participated in the Battles of the Peninsula campaign & Fair Oaks on June 1, 1862. Capt. Gott left the regiment on June 14 to serve w/ another regiment. He later left the service in February, 1864 w/ the rank of Colonel. CONDITION: flag shows staining throughout & edges are a bit frayed. Top corners have minor losses likely due to suspension.
