This is an ancient Egyptian funerary or sarcophagus mask, or simply a death mask. It’s a polychrome mask made from wood and primed with gesso, and the mask was probably made out of cedar wood imported from Lebanon. (Most of the native wood at that time was of poor quality, so wood had to be imported, and masks like this one were traditionally carved out of cedar wood from Lebanon.)We’re not sure how old the mask is, but early masks were made out of wood and later masks were made from cartonnage, a material composed of linen or papyrus covered with plaster. Cartonnage was used during the Middle Kingdom, which lasted from around 2050 BC to 1650 BC, and this mask predates that period. Ancient Egyptians believed it was important to preserve the body of the dead because the soul had to have a place to dwell in in the afterlife, and it was important for the soul to recognize the body so it could find and return to the body. That’s why death masks were made. The large eyes are outlined in black. There’s paint loss on the surface, age cracks, and wear commensurate with age.The mask is housed in a customized wooden box covered with glass; the box opens from the back. The mask is 9 inches long and 7 1/2 inches across the top. CONDITION- By registering to bid for this auction (either in-house or online) and/or placing a bid in thisauction.
