Description
MATTHEWS & WILLARD BRASS AND CAST-IRON PARLOR / TABLE LAMP, colorless ball-form shade with frosted finish, deep acid-etched swags of flowers an ribbons, brass finish, compressed urn-form unpatterned font vase with metal liner, double scroll handles to body, cast-iron foot with melon and scroll ornamentation. Fitted with a brass drop-in font with side-refill feature and wick raiser with patent information, unpatterned shoulder, correct M & W electrified slip burner. Non-period colorless chimney with frosted finish. Late 19th century. 21 1/4" H to top of shade, 11 1/2" H to top of shade ring, 6 3/4" SQ base. Shade 10 1/8" H, 4" D fitter.
Excellent condition, shade undamaged and with normal as-made minute rim flakes/roughness and additional scattered bubbles, some minute wear, foot with an enlarged hole for electrical switch. Font shoulder and refill-cap each with light denting, burner lacking components and with associated alterations. Chimney undamaged.
Literature: Parallels Courter - Center-draft Kerosene Lamps, p. 212 upper and lower left.
