Designed as a gap between its mainstream Ford and Lincoln luxury car lineups, the Lincoln-Zephyr hardly lacked for style. Its streamlined shape caused a stir in the mid-1930s and proved popular with a burgeoning upper-middle class of American car buyers.

Its John Tjaarda-penned shape was reminiscent of the Chrysler Airflow, but its speedboat-esque, prow-like grille gave the Lincoln-Zephyr a lower drag coefficient. With a 75-degree, 120-hp flathead V-12 underhood, the Zephyr moved like the wind, too. The Lincoln-Zephyr line?s V-12 was derived from Ford?s flathead V-8 and was upgraded from 267 cu. in. to 292 cu. in. for the 1940 model year.

The 1940 Lincoln-Zephyr Three-Window Coupe offered here features a striking three-window coupe body. It has been restored in factory-correct black paint with rear wheel skirts that match well with its Diamond Back four-in. whitewall radial tires. Yellow driving lamps attached to its front bumper give the Zephyr a period upgrade look.

Inside, the three-window coupe was recently reupholstered in rich burgundy leather upholstery. A custom rear seat in matching leather and a translucent burgundy steering wheel from a contemporary continental convertible give the Lincoln-Zephyr an even more elegant flair than the factory intended. Deco elements abound on the Lincoln-Zephyr?s instruments and dashboard, marking its pre-war design.

Underhood, the Lincoln-Zephyr?s V-12 has covered just a handful of miles since being rebuilt. The car?s electrical system was upgraded to a 12-volt system for reliability and drivability. The 12-volt system blends in well, with a chrome-plated alternator designed to look like a generator and an electric fuel pump. Polished dual intakes and aluminum Zephyr script heads help the V-12 breathe and look better than new. A Columbia two-speed rear end enhances the highway driving experience.

This Lincoln-Zephyr?s recent restoration makes it an immensely enjoyable addition to any collection.
