Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two hand-built terracotta "sheepface" figures, one short and rotund, and the other tall and slender. The shorter figure has arched feet, attenuated limbs, rounded shoulders, and a protruding abdomen. Its characteristic sheepface visage is comprised of pointed ears with applied ear spools, a prominent nose, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, and a tall brow with a thin headband. The taller figure has slightly-arched feet and long legs, attenuated curved arms, and protruding breasts. Its face displays similar sheepface characteristics, such as pointed ears and a tall brow, but also has puffy cheeks, a large and flat nose, and deeply-incised almond-shaped eyes. The shorter figure has black and red painted details on the buff surface, and the taller figure has red, black, and cream details in a striped pattern. A lovely duo! Size (shorter): 5.25" H (13.3 cm); size (taller): 7" H (17.8 cm).

Smaller figure has repair to right ear and restoration to left ear, nose, and left arm; also has minor losses to feet, nose, brow, and repaired ear. Larger figure has minor losses to feet and hands. Both figures have faded pigmentation remnants, and nice mineral deposits throughout.
