Nickel finish with 5-5/8" barrel, nickel silver front sight and one line “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.”. Left side of barrel is marked “44 W”. Butt strap is mounted with a factory swivel stud and ring. Mounted with two piece checkered hard rubber grips that have the raised Remington trademark at the top on each side. According to "Flayderman's Guide to Antique Firearms", there were only about 2,020 of these rare revolvers produced 1891 to 1896. The Model 1890 was the successor to the 1875/1888 Single Action Army revolvers and could have been serious competition for the Colt Single Action Army revolver. Unfortunately for Remington the introduction of their large bore cartridge revolver came after the Colt Model 1873 was well established with the military and the buying public. Remington was never able to generate military contracts for their revolver which seriously depressed sales, not only to the military but to the buying public as well. That fact coupled with Remington’s initial introduction of their revolver in a proprietary caliber (.44 Remington) further limited sales. By the time the Model 1890 revolver was introduced, the large bore revolver was rapidly falling out of favor, primarily following the introduction of semi-automatic pistols and double action revolvers. By 1895, Remington sales had dwindled to only a few per month, and so they discontinued this model in 1896. CONDITION: Fine. Overall retains generous amount of factory nickel with typical losses at muzzle and grip straps. Cylinder has most finish remaining with several very light areas of light flaking. Bore and chambers have slight roughness but a strong bore with darkness in grooves. Grips are very fine with even wear but are full sized and without cracks or material loss. Action is very crisp with solid lock up. Markings are sharp and legible.
