Description
corner cupboard, single-case construction, figured walnut with yellow pine secondary, broken-arch pediment with fan-carved rosettes and reeded finial plinth over two arched and glazed doors with flanking panels and rope-carved quarter columns, cornice molding and doors with scratch bead, fixed interior shelves with shaped fronts, orange and red over probably original blue paint, reeded mid molding over single barberpole-inlaid drawer with original brass pulls over two panel doors, original bracket feet, original brasses with traces of gilding, inlaid escutcheons, undisturbed backboards with cut nails, old possibly original dry varnished surface, attributed to John Swisegood, Davidson County, North Carolina, circa 1820, 96-1/2 x 50 x 25-1/4 in. Excellent condition with original swans' necks, rosettes, brasses, feet and blocking, lacking finials and outer finial plinths, normal wear, shrinkage cracks and abrasions, one lower door with repaired crack in frame, rear feet with notched back corners (probably for shoe molding), mid molding with one dent, brasses with dents, upper doors fit tightly, rear foot possibly reduced in height. Provenance: Descended in the Forsyth County, North Carolina family of James Madison Charles, born March 26, 1815, and his wife Mary Ann Fisher; by descent to the consigner. A very closely related Swisegood cupboard is illustrated in [The Swisegood School of Cabinet Making,] (MESDA 1973), catalog number 2. Reserve: $35,000
