He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy" and was one of the five Fireside Poets. Longfellow predominantly wrote lyric poems which are known for their musicality and which often presented stories of mythology and legend. He became the most popular American poet of his day and also had success overseas.

Book Details: This handsome antique set is elaborately bound in blindstamped dark brown cloth with raised bands and bright stamped gilt lettering, with full-edge gilt. These larger volumes are embellished with gilt tooling to the inside margins of the boards, and marbled endpapers. This work is illustrated with tissue-guarded engraved plates, including a frontispiece portrait of the author, and in-text illustrations, as well as head- and tailpieces.
Condition / Notes: These attractive volumes display some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The bindings and text blocks are sound. Volume one is lacking the marbled front free endpaper. The second volume has water markings to the inside and outside of the rear board, as well as portions of the last few pages of text. Text and illustrations are clear and crisp on clean pages.
