Hans Hofmann (German-American, 1880-1996)Attributed: Abstract Composition, oil on canvas, signed and dated 64, framed.

Hans Hofmann was a German-American painter regarded as a precursor to Abstract Expressionism and as the most influential art educator of the 20th century. He first began teaching in Munich in 1915 and trained students there until being invited to teach in the United States in 1930. In New York, he would befriend Jackson Pollock and train such luminaries as Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, and Ray Eames. He would be selected as the United States’s representative to the Venice Biennale in 1960, and since then has been the subject of retrospectives at some of the world’s most eminent museums.
