Prior to the reign of Augustus, Rome was a republic, with power vested, officially at least, in the Senate. After the death of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C., Augustus came to power as Julius Caesar's adopted son and named heir. Augustus originally shared power with Marc Antony and Marcus Lepidus, but when the latter were defeated, Augustus ruled as a de facto military dictator, ushering in a new epoch of Roman history.
