“The happiness of America is intimately connected with the happiness of all mankind”

― Marquis De Lafayette

Marquis de Lafayette was a French military general who fought in the American Revolutionary War and was a key figure in the French Revolution. His military memoirs and correspondence have been recorded, published, and read profusely since the early 19th-century. Several of Lafayette’s speeches recall his commitment to aid in the abolishment of slave trade, to give rights to non-white Americans, and seek alternatives to the death penalty.

These early 19th century books include:

‘Notice historique de M. de Lafayette’ – 1831

‘Histoire des Generaux ... Lafayette (and others)’ – 1809

‘Histoire de l'Amerique et des campagnes de General de Lafayette’ – 1828

‘Memoirs of General La Fayette embracing details.... Hartford’ – 1825
