The Party After the Pardon. Monogrammed MM and dated '48 lower right. Oil on Canvas. Measuring 59 x 59 in. Provenance: Madame Henriot, Quimper Atelier. Note: In 1921 Meheut became the French Ministry of Defense's official painter and in 1925 he began decorating commercial passenger ships, including the SS Normandie. Between world wars, he illustrated books for authors including Colette, Maurice Genevoix, and Pierre Loti, and created ceramics at Henriot in Quimper, at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, and at Villeroy & Boch in Sarre. During the 1940s he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, served as decorator for the Institut de Géologie de Rennes, and completed his celebrated illustrations of Florian Le Roy's Vieux matiers Bretons. The Museum Mathurin Meheut in Lamballe, created in 1972, preserves his work.Note:This is one of famous painter Meheuts largest format paintings, incorporating many of the visual themes of his native Brittany that he depicted so often in his many other paintings, and illustrations, as well as faience.. This painting has not been available in the market since 1999 when it sold in Quimper.
