Daniel Merlin (French,1861-1933) Oil on Panel. Four mischievous kittens at play. Signed lower right. In ornate gilt wood frame. Board 9"x14". In frame 15 1/4"x18 3/4"x1 1/2". Weight 3 pds. 3 oz. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston, SC Estate. Daniel Merlin (French, 1861-1933) was a prolific French painter of cats. He was born at Audigny (Aisne) on 14 April 1861 and died at Paris in June 1933. A student of J. P. Laurens, Merlin exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1884. Cats enraptured Merlin. He studied their investigative charms, studious mischief and innocent features, which have even the hardened pet owner forgiving their destructive trail.
