1855 PISTOL CARBINE & SHOULDER STOCK
Item Details
Description
U.S. 1855 Springfield Pistol-Carbine with the original detachable shoulder stock. Only 4,021 of these interesting arms were produced at Springfield Arsenal between 1855 and 1857. This small production run in addition to normal attrition makes them quite scarce. Dated 1856 on the lock. It is a .58 caliber, percussion, single-shot pistol with a rifled bore. Overall length of pistol 17.5”; overall length with shoulder-stock attached 28.25". Standard mountings, brass nose cap, barrel band, trigger guard & butt cap. Shoulder stock likewise 100% correct with brass furniture. Standard markings: “U.S. Springfield / Eagle on Maynard tape primer door / 1856” on the lock. Barrel date “1855” with “V” & “P” proofs over eaglehead. The pistol and stock both show light burnishing by a previous collector. The brass is very attractive with numerous bumps and dings from wartime use. The steel is lightly cleaned with mostly gunmetal grey patina. All markings are legible. The walnut shoulder stock matches the pistol wood and the pistol's brass furniture. All the wood has a very light coating of varnish. There is a moderate crack in the wood behind the lock clearly visible in the pictures. Otherwise no damage. The gun and detachable stock are 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect except for the rear sight which has been replaced with a simple V-notch sight. The image of the Civil War soldier holding one of these is for illustration purposes only.
