This fighting knife was made from a regulation model 1860 light cavalry saber by Ames. The markings on the ricasso are still crisp, with one side having the Ames maker stamp and the other side bearing the US acceptance stamp, inspector's initials JF, and an 1865 date. Whether this was a period alteration of a later one for a descendant going off to a World War is impossible to tell. The branches were removed, the guard shaved down and configured with a spear point tip. The knife still has part of the leather pad under the guard and most of the leather and wire, somewhat loose, on the grip. It now measures about 14 inches overall with an 8-inch blade. Whoever made it meant it for business.
