Europe, Victorian or Edwardian era, ca. 1837 to 1920 CE. A wonderful silver lorgnette - hand held spectacles or eyeglasses that were quite fashionable during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. This example features an ornately decorated case, one side featuring three cabochon sapphires of an azure blue hue against a leafy/floral engraved and openwork ground, the other side with lavishly delineated initials, including a G and a W in the center, with other possible interpretations. Size: 4.25" L (10.8 cm) when closed; glasses measure 4" W (10.2 cm) across; each lens measures 1.5" W x 1.25" H (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm)
