A nice Gnathian Greek oinochoe, Magnia Graecia, early 3rd Century BC, the body with two rows of vertical ribbing separated by a wavy yellow band, the base of the neck adorned with the bust of a fashionable woman facing, strands of fabric and garlands to either side descending from a band of vine above. The pouring spout if wide with pinched side, the tall handle with rounded profile and adorned with a facing lion's head just above the back of the spout. H: 10 in(26 cm). A lovely piece with on a rim chip and some mineral deposits to show for its age! Ex collection of a Manhattan, New York professor, acquired in the 1970's.
