Lot 0361
A choice Mayan jade pendant, c. AD 600 - 800, of exquisite manufacture featuring a male head in profile wearing earspools and an elaborate headdress, a second human head emerges above. 3 1/2 x 2 1/8 in (8.9 x 5.4 cm). A lovely example with a yellow-brown patina forming around the edges. Just a great piece! Custom metal stand. Jade, be it nephrite or, as in this piece, Jadeite, was highly prized by the Mayans as in other Mesoamerican cultures. Beyond a simple material value, Jade was associated symbolically with life and death. Along with colors mirroring water and vegetation as well as associations with the sun and the wind Jade had important spiritual and religious significance. Ex Chicago private collection assembled prior to 1970.
