A finely conceived Taino cohoba inhaler, c. AD 1000 - 1500, posed in recumbent human to dog-like animal shamanic Transition. Cohoba was the Hallucinogenic drug used by the Taino. Crushed seeds of the cohobana tree were mixed with lime and snuffed through the inhaler. Hands under the chin and eyes closed suggests subject is in a dream state from ingesting the drug. This piece is symbolically important as Dogs guided the dead through the underworld. Since the intent of ingesting cohoba was to spiritually die and be reborn with new knowledge the dog had significant bearing. Length 4 1/10 in (10.5 cm). In excellent condition. Ex collection of Flor Maria Alvarado and Carlton Rood of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Rood was the author of 'A Dominican Chronicle', a concise history of the island, and a US diplomat as part of the A.I.D. program from 1965 to 1969; Ex collection of Alfredo Carrada acquired from Mr. Rood in 1989.
