A fine Taino Cemi/Stamp with anthropic head and snake body, c. AD 1000 - 1500, carved in rich green serpentine. This particular form follows a Cemi/Stamp typology that includes a figural top and a base with an engraved symbolic annotation. In base design the engraving is more symbolic rather than a useful stamp. This example has an equal part quadrant base representing the 4 sacred corners of the cosmos. Cemi is the traditional Taino word for ritual goods. Length 3 4/5 in (10.0 cm), Height 3 1/2 in (9.0 cm). Ex collection of Flor Maria Alvarado and Carlton Rood of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Rood was the author of 'A Dominican Chronicle', a concise history of the island, and a US diplomat as part of the A.I.D. program from 1965 to 1969; Ex collection of Alfredo Carrada acquired from Mr. Rood in 1989.
