A lovely Taino stone duel owl head pestle, c. AD 1000 - 1500, carved in a mottled white hardstone, with geometrically decorated base and delicately sculpted with precise eye margins. Owls were the shamans ally mystically connected to the dark. 3 x 2 3/4 in (7.6 x 7 cm). In excellent condition with light deposits. Ex collection of Flor Maria Alvarado and Carlton Rood of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Rood was the author of 'A Dominican Chronicle', a concise history of the island, and a US diplomat as part of the A.I.D. program from 1965 to 1969; Ex collection of Alfredo Carrada acquired from Mr. Rood in 1989.
