A large and impressive Taino anthropic point of focus pendant, c. AD 1000 - 1500, with hands overhead and vaginal cleft likely a reference to Atabey, goddess of fertility, rain, water etc. The symbolic belly bulge associated with Atabey that usually occurs on the front in this case is found on the reverse side. Pendants this size were worn to revere the intended god or goddess during ritual events focused on the particular deity. Gently worn from generations of ceremonial handling. Made from a heavy fine grained hard stone. L: 4 3/4 in(12.1 cm). Ex collection of Flor Maria Alvarado and Carlton Rood of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Rood was the author of 'A Dominican Chronicle', a concise history of the island, and a US diplomat as part of the A.I.D. program from 1965 to 1969; Ex collection of Alfredo Carrada acquired from Mr. Rood in 1989.
