A shipwreck treasure coin from the wreck of El Cazador, the Spanish galleon sunk in 1784 off the coast of New Orleans. Nice silver 8-reale ‘Piece of Eight’. America's first silver dollar, and the most valuable circulating coin in the New World at the time. Bears the bust of Charles III, the reverse pillars believed to be what inspired the ‘$’ dollar sign used today. Dated 1781 and struck in Mexico City. Slabbed and certified by NGC. Coin a huge 38 mm, weighs 21.06 grams! Comes with a small certificate card with history of the wreck. Ex Los Angeles private collection.
