John Langley Howard (1902-1999) was a member of the Howard Family, the first family of modernism in the San Francisco. His father John Galen Howard was the architect who designed much of the UC Berkeley campus; his brother Charles Howard lived in Britain and became a member of the surrealists; He worked as a painter for the WPA, and exhibited in many galleries and museums during his life. From 1954-1965 he worked as an illustrator for Scientific American
