William Hogarth (1697-1764) was a major English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, and editorial cartoonist who was credited as a pioneer in western sequential art. His work ranged from excellent realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series called “modern moral subjects.†Much of his work, though at times vicious, poked fun at contemporary politics and customs. Illustrations in such styles as called Hogarthian.
In his youth, he was apprenticed to the engraver Ellis Gamble in Leicester Fields, where he learned to engrave trade cards and the likes. One of his most popular works is Marriage a-la-mode, a series of paintings telling the heart-wrenching story of a marriage turn dour. As with his other works, this series served as a critique of society.
