Rare Spanish Colonial Silver-Mounted Gilt and Painted Wood Casket

first quarter 18th century, Olinala, Mexico, the front marked "Viva Espana", decorated with gilt lions, scrollwork and flowers on a scarlet ground, mounted with a silver escutcheon, two-headed eagles, rosettes and pierced end medallions, raised on scroll-molded silver feet, with cotter pin hinges, the top handle attached with rose-head nails.
h. 9", w. 11-1/4", d. 7-1/4"

Typical scattered surface losses, rubbing and touch-ups throughout with dings, small losses and wear to edges. Shrinkage at lower joins and corners with adjacent restorations and small losses. Interior with paint losses; the floor with open shrinkage at center and along the perimeter. The lower and upper side edges exhibit evidence of old filler. The interior cover and interior front both with two small metal eyes that probably had chains attached. They are secured in place with the small silver two-headed eagle and rosettes. The cover is very slightly sprung with tapering front and side spaces (the largest approx. 1/4" at one front corner - see online photo). There is no key.
