Rare and striking sterling silver epergne. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York. Baluster shaft with ribbed floral flange quadrilateral raised base with 4 scallop shell-capped supports. Pierced diaper pattern and applied, chased, and repousse dense flowers, leaves, and shells. Four flower-wrapped ribbed and scrolled arms, each supporting a square tray with plain well, wide repousse shoulder, and scrolled and reeded rim. Shaft supports same larger tray. On base stylistically integrated armorial with Latin motto Virescit Vulnere Virtus (Courage Grows Strong at a Wound).
One of the finest Tiffany pieces we've had in 40 years. Hallmark includes pattern no. 5598 (first produced in 1879) and director’s letter M (1873-91).
