Emile Galle, Nancy, Rare and important 'Coquille marine' shell bowl, 1889. Asymmetric, free-formed shell. 5.1 x 33 x 17.3 cm. Cased glass, clear, streaky blue and black powder inclusions, 'Salissures intercalaires'. Fully engraved decor. Motif of an underwater scenery with algae and different shells, snails and engraved air bubbles. At the top of the shell three-dimensional marine snail. Signed: Galle (engraved).


Provenance: the bowl was purchased by Emanuel Lang from Emile Galle, who owned the Filatures & Tissages de Bonsecours in Nancy. It was than bought by a collector from the heirs of Emanuel Lang. The villa of Emanuel Lang in Nancy, built by Lucien Weissenburger is one of the main creations of the Ecole de Nancy,
