Marble Funerary Mask, with brown stain made from bat guano. The mask is elaborately engraved, suggestive of tattooing. Symbols cover the entire mask. Well defined eye margins accompany an unusually parted mouth. Funerary masks were placed at the head of elite individual burial mounds until the body decayed. At this time, the bones were exhumed and placed under the lodge floor of their closest kin. The skull was placed in a cotton sling and hung from a support pole. The mask itself became part of the caciques, or chief's ceremonial cache, used during specific memorial rituals. Comes with a metal museum display stand. Mask only: 7" x 5".
