Noriko Yammamoto (Born 1929) was part of a mid-century wave of Asian-American artists who co-mingled traditional asian painting techniques with western abstraction. Yamamoto learned caligraphy from her father and the tradition of abstraction from Richard Diebenkorn, Nathan Oliveira and Afro Baldesella, with whom she studied at Mills College. She had solo shows at the de Young Museum in 1957 and the Oakland Museum of California in 1960. Most of her early work was destroyed in a studio fire.
