The George IV sterling silver soup tureen circa 1824 by Joseph Craddock & William Reid. The bombe oval reeded base with foliage accented handles resting upon four foliage and shell form legs, the finely done detachable partially reeded cover with elaborate melon and foliage finial. The heaviest known example from this maker we have been able to find weighing an impressive 163.9 troy ounces. Measures approximately 16" x 10" x 11". The base, inside lid, and finial all appropriately hallmarked, the later custom made perfectly fitting hand hammered sterling silver insert by Samuely Smily circa 1874. In very good overall condition, no monograms, light in use expected polish scratches, the lid very lightly warped, sitting flush on one side but not quite flush on the other, some areas with old polish residue, one or two very minor pinhead dings. Note: For a comparable piece please see Christie's sale #7901, Dec. 9th, 2010, lot #53, hammer price $11,250 GBP (Approximately USD $17,700 at the time).
