Known as Territorial Gold or Fractional Gold, these beauties were made when "there was a scarcity of small coins during the California Gold Rush" (Red Book, pg. 412). These are highly prized, with an auction record of $5,750 on 12/09/2005. Normally, coin values decrease slightly if there is a hole in the coin. However, with this coin, I think there is an exception. The detail of the pin was crafted beautifully (look at the twists) and I can only image this coin was worn on the jacket of a prominent proprietor of the time!
