A rare and very attractive miniature portrait of the French Emperor Napoleon 1st contained within a hinged original Gutta Percha case.
The case looks like bakelite, being dark brown, but is actually made of a natural plant resin Gutta Percha that was discovered in Asia in the 1850s. The main difference is that it burns with an agreeable scent, instead of the acrid smell of most plastics. It lends itself to thermoplastic forming and the decoration on the case is moulded, not carved.
The case opens to reveal the painted daguerreotype portrait of Napoleon, with gilded brass inserts and glass lens. The other side is padded with faded red velour. The condition is good, but there is a chip to the retaining catch area. Nice piece of Napoleon memorabilia.
