Description
Mobiloil Gargoyle Porcelain sign original, genuine early 1900s piece. The sign shows the Gargoyle image and reads "Ask Here For Gargoyle Mobiloil" on both sides. The original heavy lead base reads "Property of/Vacuum Oil Company/Gargoyle/Mobileoil" Scarce, highly collectible sign, all original in good condition. There are a few spots where the porcelain has scraped off and some rust. Original Stand - Very Rare - It is In Condition As Shown. Size 54" Tall, 24 1/2" Diameter Sign, 19 1/2" Diameter Base. Vacuum Oil was founded in 1866. Vacuum's first big product was Gargoyle 600-W Steam Cylinder Oil, an engine lubricant patented in 1869 and still in use today. Mobil (Socony, Vacuum Oil, Magnolia Petroleum, Gargoyle)-Standard Oil Company of New York, Socony, was founded in 1882. In 1918 they purchased Magnolia Petroleum and in 1926 they purchased General Petroleum. When Socony partnered with Vacuum Oil in 1931, they used Vacuum's Mobilgas flying horse trademark, dating this sign earlier than 1931. Because the base does not include a city (Rochester) and only uses "Vacuum Oil" and is the original base for this sign, this can be date c1911-1920. They replaced the Magnolia brand with Mobilgas in 1934. In 1962 Mobilgas was replaced with Mobil as the brand. They renamed the company in 1955 to Socony-Mobil, and Mobil Oil Company in 1966.
