During WWI the Kuhler Forges were destroyed by the Allies and Otto Kuhler immigrated to the United States in 1923. His training was an an industrial designer, however he was a skilled draftsman and etcher so his first success in the United States was as an artist, primarily as an etcher. His images of Locomotives, the steel mills outside Pittsburgh today are very collectable. In the early 1930's he designed the Milwaukee Road's "Hiawatha" which ushered in the Streamlined Steam Locomotive era. His last etching was an image of the Hiawatha.
