Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. mid-5th century BCE. A gorgeous wheel-thrown drinking cup known as a skyphos - this form more-specifically known as a "glaux" - with a hemispherical body atop an applied ring foot, a thin rim surrounding the deep basin, and a pair of applied handles, one oriented horizontally, and the other vertically. The vessel exudes a beautiful luster from the black-glazed surface and depicts a red-figure owl (the Greek word for owl is "glaux") with enormous circular eyes and a feathered body standing between a pair of rising branches. Size: 6.5" W x 3.1" H (16.5 cm x 7.9 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Connecticut, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s
