ROBERT ANDERSON, Union General; Commander and The Hero of Fort Sumter.
Autograph Letter Signed “Robert Anderson” as Assistant Adjutant General, October 30, 1841, Head Quarters, Eastern Division, Troy, N.Y., 10” x 7.75”, Choice Extremely Fine. Marked “Confidential” and addressed to Cap. I. Monroe, 4th Artillery, Commanding Fort Ontario. In part: “General Wool, in compliance with instructions from Major Genl. Scott, desires me to direct you to be diligent in obtaining intelligence of all movements and preparations for movements on the part of the disturbers of the national peace (Canadian refugees and their associates) in your neighbourhood. You will communicate... any information you may obtain.... Your attention is particularly called to Major General Scott’s confidential circular of April 15, 1839--the provisions of which you will observe.... The General desires me to add, that, he knows you will require no inducement to urge to the performance of a duty, which, has been deemed of sufficient importance to engage the attention of our national government.” Inlaid; normal folds. Clearly penned and signed in brown ink. An excellent item for display.

Problems along the Canadian border started several years earlier; by early 1838, a Canadian rebellion against Great Britain was under way. President Van Buren had to issue a neutrality proclamation to dissuade Americans who sympathized with the Canadians from committing violent acts.
