19th century AD. A provincial icon on a rectangular wooden base with two registers; to the upper register, a larger panel to the left with the Madonna and Child flanked by M(H)P ?? (mother of god) and Saint John (? ????? ???????), to the right a nimbate image of Saint Nicholas (? ????? ????????) and below him Saint Athanasius (? ????? A????????), both with right hand raised in benediction, holding a bible and wearing a robe with saltires; to the lower register a scene depicting nimbate Saint George (? ????? ????????) on horseback, spearing a dragon and nimbate Saint Demetrios (? ????? ?????????) spearing the emperor Kaloyan. 1 kg, 32.5 x 24cm (12 3/4 x 9 1/2"). From a London collection; acquired on the German art market in the 1980s.
