Exemplary Sasanian Seal, Persian Empire

Lot 0030
Exemplary Sasanian Seal, Persian Empire
Of finest form, a superior carved green stone impression seal of royal grade, in fact, this spiral carved form is likely unique, finer than any to be found. This unknown dense and tightly grained, naturally homogenous green hardstone (perhaps a green jasper), is exceptionally crafted, a Sasanid court accoutrement that dates somewhere between the 4th and 6th centuries. The portrait unknown here, it seems, without a prominent crown, most likely not the bust of a ruler king. A most powerful form, precise and carefully cut, the intaglio showing a bird atop a lion at 12 o'clock between the circumferal lettering. A true museum prize. 1 3/8" wide, 1 1/8" height.
