After Italian painter Giorgione (1478–1510, Venetian school.) "Madonna and Child Between St. Francis and St. Nicasius," also known as "Castelfranco Madonna." Oil on canvas, in wooden frame, circa 18th century. Measured in frame 83.25" x 61" (or approx. 7 x 5 feet; frame width 2.25".) Relined, a bit of toning/soiling in places, some light alligatoring, one repair (about 1", see photos), frame with some wear to surface, painting overall in attractive condition. ******************** A large and impressive painting which is very true to the size of the original by Giorgione (housed in Cathedral of Castelfranco Veneto.) The Castelfranco Madonna is one of only a handful of paintings which has been positively attributed to Giorgione. The painting provides an example of "pittura sanza disegno" (painting without drawing), an approach to painting which had a great impact on the Venetian school. Giorgione died at a young age in 1510 – just one of many victims of the plague. Provenance: from a private collection. Old church stamps to rear. ** Note: In-house shipping is available for this lot. Bidders encouraged to inspect lot in person during preview, sold as-is.
