(A) AMERICAN TIGER MAPLE STOCKED FLINTLOCK MUSKET.

Lot 3296
Probably circa 1790, this musket features a round barrel with small sights added during the period of use and a bayonet lug mounted on the bottom, which has been filed down. The breech is stamped with British proofs and "RW" for Richard Wilson. The replaced lock is stamped "GALTON" at the tail and shows a worn crown over "GR" in the center, detached pan. Lock probably dates about 1820 and has a reinforced cock altered to a swan-neck cock. Brass American-made mounts composed of sheet brass. Buttplate pin-fastened and sideplate engraved with crude designs. The center ramrod ferrule is iron while the others are sheet brass. Early style curled trigger. Stock of figured maple and of early 19th century form. Steel ramrod is probably a period replacement. CONDITION: Good, barrel retains a dark patina with some scattered pitting. Lock is a second lock, but in original flintlock configuration. Brass mounts retain a partially polished surface with some dark spotting and scattered marks from use. Stock shows scattered areas of insect damage and scattered marks from use. A very nice and attractive early musket.
