Designed by famed artist James Earl Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel is considered the most distinctively American of al U.S. coin designs. Fraser patterned the Indian profile from the faces of three different Indians -- John Big Tree, an Iroquois; Two Moons, a Cheyenne; and Iron Tail, a Tecton Sioux.
