492. Salomé French affiche poster for the 1918 Theda Bara version. (Fox Film Corp., 1918, presumed lost) Original release French 46¾ x 61¾ in. stone-lithograph affiche poster for one of Theda Bara's most famous roles, Salomé. Bara, born Theodosia Goodman, was the first "manufactured" film celebrity, with a deliberately fabricated off-screen mystery designed to heighten sensation surrounding her screen persona as the first female sexual predator. A fire later at Fox studios destroyed virtually all of her 40-some films, leaving just a handful for us to appreciate her unique and totally irreplaceable quality. This powerful poster by artist Vilá is well known and respected in the vintage poster community, having appeared in Hollywood photographer Steven Schapiro's The Movie Poster Book. On linen, poster is in rather extraordinary original, unmolested condition for its age, showing only the tiniest traces of restoration.
